GLOUCESTER — Chief Leonard Campanello and Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken are pleased to announce that Akua Mind & Body is joining the Gloucester Police Department’s ANGEL Initiative and will be offering several scholarships to the Gloucester Program for program participants, to ensure that people receive the help they need, regardless of their insurance or financial situation.

The Gloucester ANGEL program allows people who suffer from addiction to turn over their remaining drug supply and paraphernalia to the Gloucester Police Department without the threat of arrest. Those in need of help are put into treatment programs as opposed to jail cells. The policy went into effect last month in an effort to address a growing opioid epidemic and to reduce the number of overdoses in Massachusetts. Click here to view the official police policy document.

“Akua is proud to partner with the Gloucester Police Department on their ANGEL Initiative. We have lost too many lives to addiction and overdoses and it is refreshing to see such a unique approach to battling addiction,” said Dr. Evan Miller, CEO of Akua. “Chief Campanello and his department are truly impacting people’s lives and we are so honored to have the opportunity to be a part of it. All of us here at Akua are looking forward to what we hope is a long and successful partnership with Gloucester.”

This summer, Chief Campanello and businessman John Rosenthal launched The Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (P.A.A.R.I.) — a new nonprofit organization created in response to Gloucester’s revolutionary drug addiction program and the immediate positive feedback from local, state and national groups.

Chief Campanello and Mayor Romeo Theken are excited to add Akua as one of The Gloucester Initiative’s valued treatment centers to help those struggling with addiction.

About Akua Mind & Body Recovery Center

Akua, a Southern California-based treatment center, offers several types of treatment services including detox, inpatient, outpatient, managed care, and holistic services. They combine treatment for the mind, body, and spirit to create a holistic therapy.  Their programs blend the latest medical advances in addiction treatments with eastern traditions, creating a rejuvenating retreat for those struggling with alcohol or drug addiction. This integrative approach combines physical, psychological, spiritual, and science-based approaches to build a solid foundation for recovery and the tools needed to confront alcohol and drug dependency.
