U.S. Surgeon General Calls for Change in Way Public Views Addiction
GLOUCESTER — John Rosenthal, chairman of the Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (P.A.A.R.I.) is pleased to announce that, in an article published on statnews.com, the U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy called for a culture shift in the way that the public views addiction.
“It is not a moral failing, or evidence of a character flaw, but a chronic disease of the brain that deserves our compassion and care,” Murthy said in the STAT article. “The report said doctors can take the lead by making clear this is a problem to fight with medicine and counseling, not imprisonment.”
In his report, Murthy went on to say that doctors must take the lead in the fight against addiction, using medicine and counseling to solve the problem rather than imprisonment. Murthy’s views directly align with P.A.A.R.I.’s mission to address the nationwide opioid epidemic, by offering treatment to those who are suffering from addiction, rather than arresting them.
