At PAARI, we are dedicated to supporting law enforcement agencies in developing non-arrest pathways to treatment and recovery. As part of this mission, four of our AmeriCorps VISTAs and one PAARI staff member participated in the CCAR Recovery Coach Academy. This voluntary training aimed to equip our team with the essential skills and knowledge needed to become effective recovery coaches.
Under the guidance of recovery coaches Michelle Simmons and Tito Rodriguez, our team spent five intensive days delving into various aspects of the recovery field. The first day focused on defining recovery and the role of a recovery coach, as well as examining personal biases towards the recovery process. The second day involved group exercises on values and differences, crisis management strategies, and sharing personal stories to highlight the importance of the training.
Days three and four were dedicated to understanding the stages of recovery, exploring the dimensions of wellness, and addressing issues related to white privilege. The final day brought all these elements together through comprehensive group exercises, allowing participants to practice and refine their new skills.
As the PAARI team moves forward, we are eager to apply the insights and skills gained from this training to better support our law enforcement partners and the broader community.
Quotes from PAARI Participants
“I participated in this training because I wanted a better perspective of recovery from the standpoint of recovery coaches and to better my ability to support as an ally,” said Anais Decquir, AmeriCorps VISTA Leader.
“I am very glad I took part in the training. It was a transformative experience that not only enhanced my professional skills but also deepened my empathy and understanding of the complex nature of addiction, inspiring me to make a positive impact in the lives of those struggling with [the disease],” said Kate Dominguez, 2nd year AmeriCorps VISTA.
“The most impactful part of the training was when Tito asked us to identify ourselves with certain groups and reflect on how we felt. It made me aware of our similarities and differences and the importance of being mindful of our own shortcomings to avoid judging others based on those differences,” said Christol Wright, 1st year AmeriCorps VISTA with PAARI.
“I wanted to participate in the CCAR Recovery Coach Academy training to further obtain and develop knowledge and skills to help people in their recovery journey. This training fostered an educational dialogue between fellow allies and those with lived experience that was truly impactful, and I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this incredible experience. I have an even stronger foundation I will continue to build upon in this space, and know that I am even more equipped and committed to being an ally to my fellow peers and community!” said Michael Zuniga, 1st year AmeriCorps VISTA.
