Xylazine

Xylazine, a sedative used in veterinary medicine, has been found increasingly in drug supplies across the country. Throughout this year, The Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative has teamed up with Brandeis University and Thomas Jefferson University to disseminate xylazine information and develop a community response to this emerging threat and ensure that our network of law enforcement, healthcare professionals, and other individuals in the field are well-informed and well-equipped with the best practices on how to address it in their communities. Together, we hosted a series of webinars focusing on topics ranging from basic xylazine information to curating community responses based on their needs. Reference and share our Xylazine One-Pager and our webinar recordings for an overview on this new drug, signs of exposure, information on the xylazine wound stages, and the updated overdose response. Keep an eye out for any future xylazine updates. We will try to keep our network as equipped as possible.

Webinar Archive:

Below you will find a recap of our previous Xylazine webinars videos that can provide practical training to law enforcement partners.

August 8th, 2023- Xylazine 101 Webinar

PAARI has been working with research partners Brandeis University and Thomas Jefferson University to develop a response to the emerging threat of xylazine. This animal sedative is being mixed into opioids and other stimulants (often called “tranq” on the streets). As xylazine has been found in an increasing number of overdose deaths around the country, leading to serious skin wounds and safety concerns related to extended heavy sedation. We want to make sure our partners feel well-informed about this emerging threat and are equipped with some best practices on how to address it in your community.

This webinar will include a presentation by Jason Bienert, a wound care nurse who has been featured in the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal for his work on xylazine.

October 10th, 2023- Xylazine 102 Webinar

PAARI has been working with research partners Brandeis University and Thomas Jefferson University to develop a response to the emerging threat of xylazine. This animal sedative is being mixed into opioids and other stimulants (often called “tranq” on the streets). We are committed to ensuring our partners are well-informed and equipped with the best practices to address this issue in your community.

This webinar will specifically concentrate on wound care and community responses to Xylazine, building upon the material previously presented in the Xylazine 101 For Public Safety Webinars.

Below you will find a series of short videos that can be shared during roll call, on social media, or at various community events and presentations to highlight PAARI’s mission, programs, and impact, and provide practical training to law enforcement partners.
